thinglink lets you embed links in images

woo hoo! it’s a video! about a picture site. that’s not pinterest or instagram. it’s better. how can that be?!

ok, ok, let’s settle down 🙂 last month I was pretty excited about new developments on youtube around embedding links in videos – what they call “external annotation”. something else I stumbled across in 2012 was a company called thinglink that embeds links in images, and offers a lot more flexibility on types of links. I gave some sneak previews of the service in my posts on greff kindler and the myspace comeback, but the video provides a better look.

the amped up images live on the thinglink server and arrive on your site via an embed code, same as with youtube. pinterest has gotten lots of love from marketers with its linkable images, but on pinterest, you are limited to a single link. here’s a picture of my friends jeff and gretchen where you can links to both their twitter handles.

there are also social sharing options to all the usual suspects (except linkedin) that drive people back to your personal thinglink page:

longtime readers will know my love for interactivity and love affair with “pop-up videos.” the logic behind putting links on-screen in youtube was that it boosted clicks from engaged viewers. will the same thing happen with links in images?
