twicca, a twitter client for android, is the best twitter client I’ve used. with a long-awaited update, it now supports multiple users. however, getting there from here takes some poking around. the short version:
- after updating or installing twicca, go to the “twicca supporters” section.
- subscribe with google wallet at some level (pricing at $1.99 and up)
- the experimental features button will now be active. click on it.
- click on “enable multiple account”
- back in twicca options, go to account settings
- at the bottom of the screen you will now see “add a new account”
- go through the add account process with the second/third/nth account info
- experience twitter bliss
more details and screenshots below. I will probably write up a primer on twicca’s account add process – I thought I already had but cannot find it in the vaults.
UPDATE: saw a review complaining that quoted retweets were gone. they have just been moved – press and hold on “reply to selected users” to see options to reply or QT (quote tweet). bizarre how great the UI is on the app and how messed up it is on settings! I was a big fan of the tweetdeck desktop app, and I wanted to like the android version. but tweetdeck, twydroid, and other, fancier twitter apps gave my droid 2 indigestion. slow loads. freezes and crashes. meanwhile, twicca never complained about my infidelity – it just worked. fast, clean. my only real complaint? no multi-user support and no indication there ever would be. the developer seems blissfully unaware of most feedback on the app. this may be due to the fact that his native land and primary market is japan.
then I saw a google plus post praising the new twicca update. I immediately +1’d the post, adding “if it added multi-user support, I’d pay $10-20 for the app.'” it’s just that good. mike replied that multi-user would indeed be awesome. something tickled my memory bone, and I went back to the twicca page in google play. there it was, gleaming on the feature list like…um, something that gleams.
but there was no further information. I installed the upgrade. still no help section. hmm. I checked the screenshots on the app page and noticed the screen shots featured a twitter handle up in the top right where mine had none. I dug around a little more and figured out how to do make the magic happen.it did cost me something, but it wasn’t $10-20. and now I’m going to tell you how.
1) if you don’t have twicca yet, install twicca!
2) when you open the app, open the options. don’t freak at the list. just click the bottom “twicca supporters.”
the supporters screen that appears will show you are not a supporter. there is the usual complete lack of information about becoming a supporter and/or what benefits one receives. the developer doesn’t share a lot, and when he does it is in the broken english of which cliches are made. “buy supporter ticket” – what does that mean?
clicking on the period options doesn’t help much, although the developer is kind enough to express the term in both days and weeks for those who are calendar-challenged. picking a sample at random and then clicking the “buy” button popped up a google wallet window. still no deets on what you got, but at least you know what it will cost you!
I picked the one month option for $5. a message appeared warning me that the options might not go away at the end of the subscription period, but neglected to tell me what those options were. returning to the twicca supporters screen:
presto! I am a subscriber complete with an expiration date. better yet, the grayed out “experimental features” button beckons…
now, back in twicca options, go to the account settings screen. presto again! you will now see an option to add additional accounts (this is after I added a second account)
the process of adding an account is just as cumbersome for the second account – you authorize through twitter and get a code number which you then provide to twicca – but when it’s done, life is good. and by good, I mean freaking awesome.
clicking on the account name at top right brings you to the account screen above and you can switch with a click. twicca is just as fast and beautiful with an extra account, and a caveat in every review of the app from a few years ago – that it only supported single accounts – is gone baby gone. I have no idea what the deal is with pricing and whether the developer plans on asking me for another $5 every month. the “warning” I got about features lasting after subscription ends makes me think that I will continue to enjoy free milk after my lease on the cow is up. I will update as I learn more.
in the meantime, if you are looking for a twitter app for your android device that doesn’t periodically shit the bed and/or suck in other ways, try twicca. if you didn’t like it because you needed to run multiple twitter handles, you can now do so while enjoying twicca goodness.
in the words of the developer, “you are the twicca supporters.” even if you don’t know it yet.
