now that facebook is under control, what about twitter?

I posted about getting Facebook under control in response to the torrent of complaints that followed the service’s recent makeover. In my life, however, managing Twitter is is a much bigger issue.

Jim Loayza over at Mashable addressed the subject of managing the Twitter stream back in December. I expect that with all the attention the service has been getting there are some new tricks out there – I like TweetDeck because it lets me separate users I want to see into different columns.

The problem with the tweetdeck group approach is that while you will catch all the posts from a chosen few, someone who doesn’t rate inclusinon in one of the groups may have a really great post that will get buried. TweetDeck does address this by allowing columns for search results on a keyword or phrase, but my monitor just isn’t wide enough! : (

I also like Topify. When someone follows you on Twitter, the service sends a basic note with a link to that user’s profile. You can automatically follow everyone who follows you, but to make sure you are getting them into the right TweetDeck groups if appropriate, it’s helpful to know a little more about them than a username. Topify does this by taking over the new follower notification role. With Topify, you will receive something more like this:

Very cool.

I will post later on SocialToo and a few others. What do you use to make Twitter more useful?
